The first official trailer for The Hobbit has been released, and holy all things awesome, Batman.

The Hobbit was a life-changing book for me. I seriously read that book at least a dozen times as a child, and it would be fair to say it is one of the many books that saved my life back then, which seems melodramatic to say perhaps, but it is its own truth.

Suffice it to say, I can’t wait for this movie to release next December. There are few movies I care to see more than once in the theater, and I fully expect this movie to be one of them.

This is what I call a brilliant TV spot:

Though, honestly, the minimalist in me says it’d be better without the final voice over. Just leave it on the shot of the light left on a couple seconds longer–let the audience click, let it sink in a second–and fade to the PowerSmart logo with a link to the website.

Boom!

My old prof and pal, John King, has embarked on a blog project wherein he is watching his entire DVD collection in alphabetical order: Little Round Mirrors.

John’s DVD collection is extensive and distinguished, to say the least, and in line with the title, his posts are introspective and thoughtful with a good giggity’s worth of humor–written in a voice I wish more movie reviews were written in–this sort of Rilkean reaction to the movies, instead of technical critique and box office numbers. John invokes the Canterbury Effect, this sense of wanting to tell you a story in exchange for a story told, which in turn makes you want to tell your own.

Speaking of movies, Everything is Terrible is trying to amass the world’s largest collection of Jerry McGuire VHS tapes.

For over a year, we’ve been chronicling wild packs of Maguires in their native thrift store habitat with our patented Maguirewatches, and during that time, we decided to start a Jerry Maguire sanctuary to preserve these great artifacts. Our goal is to have the largest private collection of Jerry Maguire VHS tapes in the history of mankind and we need your help. If you or somebody you know has a VHS copy of Jerry Maguire that needs a loving home, please donate it to us at:

I kind of hope John has an old copy of McGuire around. I’d be interested in his 3-cents (adjusted for inflation).

I’m kind of surprised I’ve not seen this pop up on Big Other or HTML Giant yet.

Every Sundance, there are always a few movies everyone is talking about before the Festival.  You know…the ones with buzz. One of the movies at this year’s Fest that people are talking about is Howl.  The reason…it’s filled with an all star cast consisting of James Franco, Jon Hamm, David Strathairn, Treat Williams, Bob Balaban, Alessandro Nivola, Mary Louise Parker and Jeff Daniels.  Also, you’ve got Franco playing a young Allen Ginsberg and as the synopsis says, “it’s a legal drama, a character study and an animated trip into the magic and madness of the modern world.”

With Sundance set to begin later this week, we’ve landed the first footage from Howl and it’s four clips from the film.  If you’d like a sneak peak at one of the big films from this year’s Fest…take a look.  Also, the film plays this Thursday night in Park City, so reviews will be everywhere on Friday.

Paul: When people from before come up, I want you to understand what they hate when they see me.

Feng Shui: Pretend you’re standing over the ocean. You’re a millionaire. Pretend you’re running over the ocean. You’re jumping across mountains. You’re jumping across mountains. Everybody loves you.
***

Paul: I just want to make sure that a million years from now I can still see you up close and we’ll still have amazing things to say.
***

Noel: Last night I had a dream that you grew a garden on the trampoline and I was so happy that I invented peanut butter!

Paul: Do you wanna know a secret that I didn’t tell anybody ever?… You know how ducks fly home in a V? It’s like a v-shape when they get home? I was walking my dog and I looked up and there’s this big V above me, there’s all these ducks flying back to their home. And right when they flew above me, I saw ‘em and, they crashed into a big house! The whole V! And then, they hit the ground, and they just kinda curled up. You ever fucking see that? Have you ever seen a mistake in nature? Have you ever seen an animal make a mistake?
